HLA B5 cluster in the ocular form of Behcet's Disease (BD)

Abstract: The association of B5 and uveitis has been previously demonstrated. 37 patients with ocular form were studied for HLA, ABC and DR antigens, with a large panel of antisera (A.O.H.W.C panel sera). Results are: Antigen Control Patient Relative R. Chi square P value B5 42 (42%) 35( 94.6%) 24.16 30.35 <0.000001 B51 32 (32%) 30( 81 %) 9.23 24.53 <0.000001 B5 clus. 62 (62%) 37(100 %) ----- 19.46 <0.0001 DRW52 56 (56%) 25( 73.5%) 2.18 3.26 NS DQW1 38 (38%) 10( 29.4%) 0.68 0.81 NS Significant association between B5 and strong linking between B51 and the ocular form of the disease was observed. Although non significant, DRW52 demonstrates an increase and DQW1 a decrease in BD. If we consider the hypothesis that HLA antigens may serve as a receptor for some viruses, B5 cluster antigens could carry an antigenic determinant or receptor for the causative agent of BD.
